What is the role of glass cement in the installation of kitchen sinks?

Glass cement primarily serves three core functions in the installation of kitchen sinks: sealing, fixing, and protecting, as detailed below:

1. Sealed and leak-proof

There are usually splicing gaps between the sink and the countertop or wall surface (such as the joint between the edge of the countertop opening and the stainless steel/quartz stone basin of the sink). After curing, the glass cement forms an elastic sealing layer, which can effectively fill the gap and prevent water, oil, or food residue from infiltrating into the interior. If the sealing is not tight, long-term water infiltration can lead to mold growth, blackening of the countertop, moisture-induced deformation, and even decay of the cabinet (especially wooden cabinets). After the glass cement cures, the surface becomes smooth and flat. By selecting a glue with a color similar to the countertop or sink (such as transparent, white, or stainless steel), the imperfections of the gap can be covered, making the installation effect more tidy and uniform.

4. Anti-mildew and anti-stain (special formula)

The kitchen environment is damp and prone to residual food oil stains. Regular glass cement is prone to mold growth (turning black and dirty) when exposed to moisture for extended periods, affecting hygiene and aesthetics. Therefore, anti-mold neutral silicone glass cement is usually chosen for sink installation. It contains antibacterial ingredients that can inhibit mold growth, extend the lifespan of the sealing layer, and reduce the cleaning hassle of mold and blackening in the later stages.

Precautions

During construction, it is necessary to ensure that the edges of the sink and the countertop are dry and clean. After applying glue, scrape off any excess and wait for 24-48 hours for it to fully cure before using the sink to ensure the sealing effect. If the glass glue ages, becomes moldy, or falls off later, it is necessary to clean the old glue and reapply glue for repair.
